March 2007 Programme
28 Feb - Bob McKay Quartet (Well, it's almost March)
Bob
McKay - saxes,
Dominic Ashworth -guitar, Chris
Dodds - bass,
Paul
Clarvis - drums
Bob's multi- instrumental talents have taken him all over the world with some of the most famous names in the industry. As well as being a veteran 'West End Show' musician, Bob still actively works with many of the best modern jazz and dance bands in England. Local fans may know him best for his recent work with Sax Appeal. French-Canadian Dominic Ashworth studied guitar in Toronto and Spain before moving to England fulltime. He joined Digbys Half Dozen in 1998, and also works with Carol Kidd, Michael Garrick, and Julian Marc's Dream Band as well as leading his own acoustic trio and teaching at Trinity College of Music. Unusually in the jazz scene Dominic likes using the nylon-stringed classical guitar but is equally at home doing Jimi Hendrix or Charlie Christian on the electrical instrument.
Bob McKay Quartet
Chris Dodd is equally comfortable playing the funkiest electric bass eg with Jamiroquai or swinging on acoustic bass in the company of leading jazzers throughout the world eg Dick Pierce, Tony Levin, Gary Burton, Bheki Mseleku, Wynton Marsalis, Julian Joseph, John Etheridge and Mark Mondesir to name but a few. Paul Clarvis plays with many different bands and is involved with all musical genres, working with musicians ranging from Leonard Bernstein, Harrison Birtwhistle and John Dankworth to Randy Crawford. He has recorded albums with Gordon Beck, Brian Ferry, John Williams, Sam Rivers, Moondog, John Adams, Mark Anthony Turnage, Marc Ribot / John Zorn, Michel Legrand, Elton John, Richard Thompson, Henry Lowther's Stillwaters and John Harle. He has worked with Mose Allison, Randy Brecker, Ravi Shankar and most of the London orchestras as featured percussionist / drummer. He has travelled widely researching and studying music from other countries and is a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
Expect anything from Cole Porter to Joni Mitchell. Relaxed acoustic interpretations, driving jazz and even the odd groove! A wide variety of instrumental textures and musical styles from an eclectic but accessible band.

14 Mar - The Vasilis X Quartet
Vasilis Xenopoulos - saxes, Will Bartlett - pno, Will Hyland - bass, Chris Nickolls - drums
Originally from Athens Vasilis has been in London now for close on four years. The band repertoire comprises mainly originals from Vasilis and pianist Will Bartlett in a mostly contemporary vein with funk with latin grooves much in evidence. With his irrepressible enthusiasm and engaging personality Vasilis has built a reputation at WOW for really fun gigs. He says himself that WOW is the best place he's ever played. Probably worth reserving for this one; the last gig was almost full. Will Hyland and Chris Nickolls have been growing in depth and confidence and have now grown into a truly outstanding WOW rhythm team.
